The Best Coffee-to-Water Ratio for Every Brewing Method
Understand coffee-to-water ratios for pour-over, French press, AeroPress and other brewing methods, plus how to adjust them to taste.
What Is a Coffee-to-Water Ratio?
Coffee-to-water ratio describes how much coffee you use compared with the amount of brewing water. It gives you a repeatable starting point.
For example, a 1:16 ratio means one part coffee to sixteen parts water by weight.
Pour Over
A practical starting range for pour-over is around 1:15 to 1:17. A recipe might use 15 grams of coffee with 240 grams of water.
If the result is too strong, increase the water slightly. If it is too weak, reduce the water or increase the coffee.
French Press
French press recipes often use ratios around 1:12 to 1:17 depending on the style and serving preference. Because immersion brewing behaves differently from filter brewing, taste matters more than following one exact number.
AeroPress
AeroPress recipes vary widely because the method supports short, concentrated brews that can be diluted afterward. Starting ratios around 1:12 to 1:15 can be useful, but there is enormous room for experimentation.
Espresso
Espresso is usually discussed as a brew ratio, such as 1:2, referring to the relationship between dry coffee dose and liquid espresso output. For example, 18 grams of coffee might produce around 36 grams of espresso.
The right ratio depends on the coffee, machine and desired flavour.
Ratio Is a Starting Point
A ratio cannot tell you whether a coffee will taste good. Grind size, water temperature, brew time and the coffee itself still matter.
Use ratios to create consistency, then use taste to decide what to change.
Find Your Personal Ratio
The most useful ratio is the one that repeatedly gives you a cup you enjoy. Record your recipes and compare them across coffees.
Over time, you will develop a personal set of starting points for different brewing methods.
